Hello Honest,

I'm John an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft user like you. I'll be happy to assist you today. I understand you have a problem with Start Menu tile background color changes are being ignored.

With the release of Windows version 20H2, Microsoft has removed the system accent color behind tiles. This is called "Theme-aware tiles" in Start. Changing the individual colors of the tiles is no longer possible. I would recommend sending comments and suggestions about this through Feedback Hub app. There a number of people expressing disappointment about the new feature and hopefully Microsoft will release in the future an option in settings to turn this on/off.

Kindly let me know if this helps or if you have any further concerns.

Sincerely

Thank you, John, this does explain the problem.  Microsoft apparently loves to mess with peoples' freedom of expression.  Here are a few of our thoughts:

  • When adding features, why disable the old features?  Why not allow the user to select their preferred look?
  • Why take away a feature that allows the user greater flexibility in color and design in favor of a static dark and light?
  • Why does Microsoft always impose their vision of what is best, rather than allow users to determine their own needs?  Which, by the way, are often incredible discoveries of visual functionality.
  • With all the online articles on how to change tile background, including for individual tiles, wouldn't that send a message that it was a desirable feature?
  • So, if they have disabled the feature, why does it still allow us to perform the personalization?  In fact, the preview window in the dialog even reflects the changes in tile background color.  We spent considerable time, including this correspondence, tracking down the problem because the options were still available and it appeared to be a bug.

Thank you again for your insights.

They are doing this just to force people to think like them, which will never gonna happen.

They are trying to change people's choice which will also, "Not gonna happen!"

They are trying to say that this is better! "Not what you like."

This is so disappointing. My mother, 81, uses an ACER Windows 10 tablet. She is blind in one eye and losing sight in the other, but with the dark background behind the tiles in tablet mode it was easy for her to open the few apps she liked to use.
Now that the background and tiles are the same color, it's impossible for her to see them.
I'm really losing faith in Microsoft at this point.
It almost feels like you didn't take into account that people with visual impairment actually use your products. This should have been an OPTIONAL setting, not forced on us. I'm really disgusted.

Hi John DeV!

I appreciate your response. I didn't know about the feedback hub until I read your post! I went ahead and left some feedback as you suggested to Honest Abe.

For those who wish to get Microsoft's attention about this, there's a feedback suggestion titled "Changing individual tile color". I personally feel this is an excellent solution to many people's problems (those who wish to have standard colors can, those who wish to color code their tiles by utility can, and those with visual impairment can make bright colors to find the apps they use, etc.). Just a simple Microsoft account login and upvote on the feedback hub app lets them know how we feel!

If enough of us speak up I trust they'll make the change. :)

Cheers!

YES i agree with the lack of choice. I delayed my switch over until i could no longer use the computer, which was TODAY.

Personalization is now NO LONGER personal. If i could afford to overhaul all my technology i would. Microsoft have ignored ALL my feedback and contact with them.

At first, windows forced me to upgrade to 20H2. It didn't even ask me. Windows just offered me to restart computer to upgrade. And now I faced with this issue. I am disappointed.
